Ed’s “Best Whiskey Sour I Ever Had”
An improvement on an old favorite
2 liters Club Soda
2 cans Frozen Lemonade Concentrate
2-4 oz Sour Mix
2 lb Ice (adjust to suit climate, patience and taste)
Blended Whiskey to taste
Begin by dissolving the lemonade in the club soda. The mixture will be a tad soupy. Add the sour mix (avoid overly sweet mixes, particularly those labeled “whiskey sour mix” and stick with something more like Rose’s brand sweet and sour mix or the drink will be too sweet). Place ice in a large container such as a cooler or punch bowl. Add lemonade mixture. Add whiskey, stirring slightly to blend, and check often for suitable taste. This basic recipe is intended to give you a fairly concentrated sweet and sour flavor that holds up well as the ice melts. As a result, the amount of whiskey you can add and still have a “smooth” flavor is greater than you might expect. Please enjoy responsibly. We have found that a 1 liter bottle of whiskey or more (not kidding) is just about the right flavor once the ice melts, but these drinks can “sneak up” on unwary guests, so be careful. Some people prefer to use more club soda and less ice in order to have the right balance instantly, rather than making a concentrated drink mix that doesn’t balance out until after some of the ice melts. Another variation is to split 50/50 between club soda and 7-up or a similar beverage. We find that one too sweet, but some folks love it. The last variation is to use a jumbo blender and add a raw egg while blending. This gives the drink a nice frothy quality, but it isn’t for everyone. Also, there is a small health risk associated with the consumption of uncooked eggs.
